New Live Performance Added

August 14, 2018 By Andrew

At this year’s Stompology I had the honor of presenting a new solo piece. All the Sounds is a piece of thematic improvisation that journeys the audience through a series of rhythms and traditional steps (including a quote from Gregory Hines), that have been foundational in my journey as a tap dancer.

The piece begins with an invitation to the audience to close their eyes. Then the dancing is heard. West African rhythms, swing, and funk, all intertwine as traditional tap dance steps from the Shim Sham, Gregory Hines, Jimmy Slyde, and Savion Glover are reference and explored.

Check out the whole piece here.

Andrew and Evie – Exploring Fiddle Tunes

July 24, 2018 By Andrew

During a week in the spring in 2018 I traveled to get together with my Holler Jake bandmate Evie Andrus to experiment with the combination of tap dancing and fiddle tunes. The videos were released weekly on Holler Jake’s facebook page, and are now available for your enjoyment on my portfolio page here.

Tap Dancing in Virtual Reality, Part II

July 17, 2018 By Andrew

Back in January 2017 I wrote about the TiltBrush Artist in Residence program, and some of the work I produced while there. The idea of combining tap dance and virtual reality is very new. It’s so new that when I was invited to produce a 360 video to celebrate a recent collaboration between Google Arts and Culture and Deutsche Grammophon, I wondered if anyone else had already done something similar. While many other dance companies have experimented with 360 videos, I’m so happy to have partnered with Windrider Institute to produce the first 360 video of a tap dancer. Check out the complete video in my portfolio here. Use Google’s cardboard to get the full virtual reality experience.

Holler Jake Album Released!!!

May 5, 2018 By Andrew

One of my dreams has been to be in a band, as a tap dancer. I’ve come close many times – a regular with the Cangelosi Cards, fronting my own old time jazz Quartet, and putting a number of units together for theatre and club dates. But Holler Jake is different. For the past few years this group began to develop around a few key individuals and a special affinity we all found for the appalachian region. And today we’re releasing our first album!!!!

The album will only be available at our live shows so come out to see us! Check out the band on Instagram and Facebook for news.

I’m going Around the World!

May 1, 2018 By Andrew

Over the next 6 weeks I’ll be going around the world, literally. This is a huge trip, celebrating tap dance and connecting with friends from many of the communities I call home – faith, TED, artists, etc. If you’re in any one of these cities, let’s connect! I’d love to see you.

Tel Aviv – May 4-14th, Taking part in this National Geographic Expedition organized by TED Fellow Aziz Abu Sarah, then taking some time to share some tap dancing at Pasito Studio.

Tokyo – May 15th-23rd, Sharing stories and dancing at Yellow Ren Cultural Center, Ginza Church, and Kaz Tap Studios.

Vancouver – May 24-30th, Tap Dance Day Celebrations at the Rhythm Room (Website) and Vancouver Tap Dance Society (Facebook Event) and sharing at local faith-centered communities.

Boise, Idaho – June 1-June 14th, Working the folks at Windrider on a documentary short, then speaking and performing at the REFLECT Conference!!

Rochester, NY – June 15-17th, Stompology Solo Jazz Dance Weekend.

Then home to rest (sort of ;-))

New World Soul Show is Live

June 30, 2017 By Andrew

A few weeks ago, I performed with a group of dancers I’m been connected with since the early 2000s. World Soul is a collective of street dancers curated by Brian Green that aims to showcase the relatedness of dance styles and celebrate their unique expression. For our most recent performance in Osaka, Japan, I co-choreographed the showcase alongside fellow member, Kim Holmes. What came to life was a story of beautiful interplay between the dances of tap, house, and African. For the first time in my career, I was able to be a part of making a show in which tap dance not only was part of the music, it was the music.

Enjoy my featured solo above. See the entire performance here.
