Summer Recap II – Barcelona

October 24, 2013 By Andrew

I landed in Barcelona and all I wanted to do was visit the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the famous unfinished cathedral that was ultimately the brain child of Antoni Gaudí. I was actually in Barcelona for the Tap On Tap Festival. The festival was 6 days of non-stop tap dance. Classes in the daytime and jam-sessions, shows, and panel discussions at night. It was my first time in Barcelona, meeting everyone from the tap scene there, and hanging with Guillem Alonso at his brand new tap dance studio (Yes! A studio dedicated to tap dance!). The classes were great. We worked out some complicated patterns and time shifting in the Advanced Class. We talked about pattern theory and Slyde’s basics in the Beginner Class. In the Intermediate class while working on tons of technique we talked about process and process and process. We drilled so far down I ended up in a follow up conversation about the nature of free will with one of the students – one the highlights of the festival for me. But still Sagrada was calling. So one morning, after missing an opportunity the previous day, I woke up at 6AM – not my normal time. I made it to Sagrada before anything was open – I mean anything – so I sat on the floor in front of the ticketing area. I was the first one in line. After a few hours of waiting my early morning paid off as I walked into the Sagrada. The space was quite but for a choir practicing. It was heavenly. It is in moments like this that language begins to fail. Instead, take a look at some of the pictures yourself. SagradaFamilia
