New World Soul Show is Live

A few weeks ago, I performed with a group of dancers I’m been connected with since the early 2000s. World Soul is a collective of street dancers curated by Brian Green that aims to showcase the relatedness of dance styles and celebrate their unique expression. For our most recent performance in Osaka, Japan, I co-choreographed the showcase alongside fellow member, Kim Holmes. What came to life was a story of beautiful interplay between the dances of tap, house, and African. For the first time in my career, I was able to be a part of making a show in which tap dance not only was part of the music, it was the music.

The “Between Two Worlds” program—part of a series focusing on using the arts FOR SOCIAL IMPACT – was founded by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Carla Dirlikov Canales. The Canales Project aims to recruit what Canales calls an “army of compassion,” a diverse roster of artists, each of whom has a personal story about living “between two worlds” and of dealing with the tensions of different cultural environments. The concert uses performance and conversation to explore the artists’ experiences, relate them to the challenges facing the audience, and help lead, in Canales’ words, “the journey from the other to the all.”

Andrew joins Sandeep Das (Tabla) and Samora Pinderhughes (composer/pianist/vocalist) as featured artists on this program.

Andrew joins a stellar faculty including Brenda Bufalino, Kazunori Kumagai, Nicholas Young, Josh Hilberman, Jumaane Taylor, Sam Weber, Lisa La Touche, Jason Janas, and Michelle Dorrance, in what has become one of the most popular tap dance festivals in the world. Andrew will be performing (with a special appearance with the Michele Drees Tap Project), teaching workshops, and giving lectures.

CPD 10th Anniversary Season

Cats Paying Dues and founding artistic director, Andrew Nemr, will celebrate their 10th Anniversary Season with the premiere of Three Suites in May 13-17, 2015. The new work will highlight the unique aesthetics the company has brought to the stage over it’s ten year history. A path for the future will also be charted with a special collaboration with hammered dulcimer virtuoso and composer Max ZT and his band House of Waters. Core company members Allie Pizzo, Carlos Morales, Jason Stump and Mallory Davis will be joined by past alum Alexander MacDonald, Jess Gersony, and Thomas Sutter, and affiliates Adele Joel and Naoyuki Hashimoto, as the company continues it’s model of being a place of mentorship and community for dancers and unique application of the craft. Max ZT, House of Waters, and artistic director, Andrew Nemr, will also perform.
